Scottie Phillips
Scottie Phillips Clears Waivers
Tue, May 3, 2022, 6:22 PM
Phillips was reverted to IR after clearing waivers Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: Phillips suited up three times for the Texans last season, getting six carries for 13 yards, and securing two of three targets for nine yards. His season was cut short due to an ankle injury in Week 9 against Miami that sent him to IR, and he never returned. The 24-year-old will be forced to miss the 2022 season, but he'll look to return strong in 2023 and earn an NFL roster spot.
Davis Mills
Davis Mills Seems to have coach's confidence
Mon, Apr 11, 2022, 12:53 PM
Texans coach Lovie Smith said Monday that Mills is the team's quarterback, while offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton used the term "potentially our starting quarterback," Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: The 2021 third-round pick won just two of 11 starts last season, but both came in the final five weeks -- a stretch where he completed 68.4 percent of his passes for 7.4 YPA with nine touchdowns and only two interceptions. While he may have done enough to earn his shot as the Week 1 starter, Mills doesn't offer much fantasy upside for single-QB leagues, as he rarely runs (18 carries for 44 yards last year) and is stuck on one of the worst rosters in the NFL. The Texans have had a quiet offseason in terms of veteran additions, mostly settling for discount additions like RB Marlon Mack and WR DaeSean Hamilton. They did sign Brandin Cooks to an extension, locking in Mills' favorite target from last year, and the draft will bring more talent after trades netted Houston extra picks in Rounds 1, 3 and 4. The problem for Mills is that one of those picks could be a QB who threatens his starting spot, be it this summer or later down the line.
Brandin Cooks
Brandin Cooks Earns two-year extension
Thu, Apr 7, 2022, 6:16 PM
The Texans and Cooks agreed to a two-year contract extension Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: The move puts to bed rumors that Cooks could be on the move this offseason and locks him in with Houston through the 2024 season. Only 28 years old, he's been a member of four organizations in his eight-year career, going for at least 1,000 yards in six of the last seven seasons and surpassing the 80-catch mark four times during that span. Cooks will continue to serve as the unquestioned No. 1 option for the Texans' passing game moving forward.
Marlon Mack
Marlon Mack Heading to Houston
Fri, Apr 1, 2022, 6:20 PM
The Texans and Mack agreed to a contract Friday, Sarah Barshop of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: A fourth-round pick of the Colts in 2017, Mack worked his way to the top of the depth chart at running back in his second and third seasons, combining for 1,999 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground between 2018 and 2019. Indianapolis then selected Jonathan Taylor in the second round of the 2020 Draft, which was followed by Mack tearing his Achilles in Week 1 of that campaign. Mack only appeared in six games last year, averaging 3.6 yards on his 28 carries, and otherwise was a healthy scratch after Week 8, a late-season bout on the reserve/COVID-19 list aside. In Houston, he'll vie for slotting in the backfield with Rex Burkhead, Royce Freeman and Dare Ogunbowale.
Andy Janovich
Andy Janovich Signing with Texans
Wed, Mar 23, 2022, 4:05 PM
Janovich agreed to a one-year contract with the Texans on Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: After the Browns elected not exercise their team option on Janovich's contract prior to the new league year, the 28-year-old will step in as Houston's primary fullback in 2022. Across his two seasons in Cleveland, the 28-year-old rushed four times for four yards and a touchdown while securing five of nine targets for 22 yards.
Deshaun Watson
Deshaun Watson New Orleans and Atlanta in the mix
Fri, Mar 18, 2022, 10:19 AM
The Saints and Falcons remain in the mix to trade for Watson, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
Analysis: The report notes that the Browns and Panthers are no longer candidates to make a deal for the quarterback, who remained on Houston's roster last season but did not suit up for any games. Last week, a grand jury declined to indict Watson on criminal charges stemming from allegations of sexual misconduct and since then there's been movement toward the Texans dealing the 2017 first-rounder, who must waive his no-trade clause for that to transpire.
Royce Freeman
Royce Freeman Stays with Houston
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 8:52 AM
Freeman is re-signing with the Texans on a one-year, $1.2 million contract, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: The deal reportedly includes $895,000 fully guaranteed, suggesting Freeman is expected to have a spot on the 53-man roster. That's certainly the case given the current state of Houston's backfield depth chart, though the team has plenty of time to add more talent before Week 1. In all likelihood, Freeman will be a special teams player and backup.
Dare Ogunbowale
Dare Ogunbowale Joining Texans' backfield
Wed, Mar 16, 2022, 4:07 PM
The Texans have signed Ogunbwale to a two-year, $3.3 million deal, Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.
Analysis: Ogunbowale joins a Texans running back corps that is in transition. Once the dust settles after free agency and the draft, however, we'll have a better read on Ogunbowale's role in 2022, but either way the 27-year-old gives Houston's backfield some needed depth.
Kyle Allen
Kyle Allen Set to sign with Texans
Wed, Mar 16, 2022, 3:30 PM
The Texans are signing Allen to a one-year deal, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis: The report notes that Allen's deal is for $2.5 million and includes $2.25 million fully guaranteed. The 26-year-old -- who spent the last two seasons with Washington -- will provide Houston with added QB depth behind Davis Mills, with Deshaun Watson poised to be traded in the coming days.
Pharaoh Brown
Pharaoh Brown Remaining with Texans
Tue, Mar 15, 2022, 3:12 PM
The Texans have agreed to a one-year deal with Brown, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: The report indicates that the 27-year-old's deal to remain with the team includes $3 million fully guaranteed and could reach up to $4 million with incentives. Brown, who finished last season with 23 catches on 34 targets for 171 yards in 15 games, heads into the 2022 campaign with modest fantasy upside in the context of working in a tight end corps that also includes 2021 fifth-rounder Brevin Jordan.
Deshaun Watson
Deshaun Watson Meeting with Browns
Tue, Mar 15, 2022, 9:06 AM
The Browns are set to meet with Watson in Houston on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network reports.
Analysis: Teams are lining up to talk with Watson, who met with the Panthers and Saints on Monday. Those two clubs have reportedly submitted proposals, and now Cleveland's leadership team will attempt to sway Watson. The Browns have Baker Mayfield under contract for 2022 -- the final year of his rookie deal -- but they are open to the idea of an upgrade at the position.
Antony Auclair
Antony Auclair Re-signs with Houston
Mon, Mar 14, 2022, 11:03 AM
The Texans re-signed Auclair on Monday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Auclair will return to Houston for a second straight season. The veteran tight end appeared in 16 contests during the 2021 campaign, across which span he secured all five of his targets for 47 yards and one score.
Chris Moore
Chris Moore Remaining in Houston
Sun, Mar 13, 2022, 9:26 PM
Moore will sign a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Texans on Sunday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: Moore began the 2021 campaign on the Texans' practice squad and was elevated to the active roster for several games early in the season before landing a permanent roster spot in mid-October. He showed glimpses of potential, including his Week 5 performance against the Patriots in which he hauled in all five of his targets for 109 yards and a touchdown. The 28-year-old will presumably have to compete for a roster spot once again during training camp in 2022.
Chris Conley
Chris Conley Returns on one-year deal
Sat, Mar 12, 2022, 10:59 AM
Conley (knee) signed a one-year contract with the Texans on Saturday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: Conley's first year in Houston was hardly a success as the veteran wide receiver saw a dramatic drop in opportunities after two years as the Jaguars' deep threat. Part of that could simply be due to the Texans' putrid passing offense, but it's hard to have much optimism for Conley's future given the 28-year-old set a four-year low in both receptions and receiving yards.
Deshaun Watson
Deshaun Watson Won't face criminal charges
Fri, Mar 11, 2022, 4:28 PM
A grand jury in Harris County Texas has declined to indict Watson in the wake of a police investigation stemming from lawsuits filed by 22 women who have accused the quarterback of sexual misconduct, ESPN's Sarah Barshop reports.
Analysis: As a result, Watson won't face criminal charges related to the allegations, but he still faces civil case depositions and possible discipline from the NFL. A statement released by NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy on Friday noted the league has "been closely monitoring all developments in the matter which remains under review of the personal conduct policy."
Jeff Driskel
Jeff Driskel Remains with Texans
Fri, Mar 11, 2022, 2:04 PM
Driskel signed a one-year contract extension with Houston on Friday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: Driskel finished 2021 on injured reserve after suffering a fractured collarbone in December, and he appeared in only one game during the campaign. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the 28-year-old will shift back to quarterback after seeing action at tight end late last season.
Rex Burkhead
Rex Burkhead Could be complementary piece
Tue, Mar 8, 2022, 7:52 AM
Houston general manager Nick Caserio said Burkhead's increased role at the end of 2021 was borne "more out of need than anything else," Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: That comment suggests the team views Burkhead as a complementary piece in 2022, and not the lead back. The Texans are expected to explore the free-agent market for team-friendly, affordable options, but they could also add a back after the first round of the draft. Houston holds the third-overall pick in the draft and is thought to be looking at help on the offensive line or defense, per John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.
Davion Davis
Davion Davis Signs one-year deal with Houston
Mon, Mar 7, 2022, 3:16 PM
Davis (ankle) signed a one-year, $895,000 contract with the Texans on Thursday, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports.
Analysis: Davis was signed by the Texans off the Browns' practice squad at the beginning of October, but he made just two appearances with Houston before suffering a fractured left ankle that cost him the remainder of the campaign. Wilson relays that Davis' rehab from the surgery to repair the ankle is going well, and he should be ready to go for training camp ahead of the 2022 season.
Deshaun Watson
Deshaun Watson Status remains unclear
Wed, Mar 2, 2022, 2:00 PM
Texans head coach Lovie Smith said Wednesday that he has "no idea" if Watson (not injury-related) will be on the Texans' roster this season, Aaron Reiss of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Watson remained on Houston's roster throughout the 2021 campaign while he dealt with investigations relating to 22 civil lawsuits alleging sexual assault and misconduct, but he was a healthy scratch for every game. His situation remains murky, and based on Smith's comments, it appears that Houston will head into the 2022 NFL Draft operating as if Watson won't be available once again.
Antony Auclair
Antony Auclair Catches lone target Week 18
Thu, Jan 13, 2022, 9:36 PM
Auclair caught his lone target for seven yards in Week 18's 28-25 loss to Tennessee.
Analysis: This was just Auclair's second catch since Week 9, and he finished the season with five catches on five targets for 47 yards and one score. He played all 16 games, sometimes starting, but the 28-year-old was used primarily as a blocker. He becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason but could return on a modest contract to serve a similar role in 2022.
